Compass and Souths Cares get working!

13 May 2013

Souths Cares, the charitable arm of the Rabbitohs, has produced a video about their partnership with the University of Sydney. Watch it now.

Last week, the University of Sydney welcomed the first cohort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students to visit the University through its partnership with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The partnership was forged in June last year to encourage and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth to achieve their goals with a focus on education, training and employment in the South Sydney region.

"This is a priority for the University and is a part of our commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander higher education, research and engagement," said Dr Spence. "We are determined to do more to increase the number of Indigenous students and staff at the University."

General Manager of Souths Cares, the charitable arm of the Rabbitohs, Shannon Donato said: "The objective is to have them at the university experiencing university life. They will be working with indigenous postgrad students, so it's all going to be culturally relevant.

"They are going to be working with them on a health promotion campaign, a health promotion clip that they can go back and deliver in their schools and their communities.

"I'm hoping it will light a spark that will drive them to success at university."

The workshop last week was the first of five workshops the students will participate in. The final workshop will be in October when they will launch the health promotion clip they produced.

The University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy and Services) Professor Shane Houston, a Gangulu man from central Queensland, said: "This agreement opens the way for us to work with the Rabbitohs to promote the benefits of education and healthy lifestyles. These students will in turn become positive role models in their communities."
