Volunteering to help students find their way to uni
26 November 2013
2013 has been a huge year for the Compass Volunteer Program. Since 2009 we have been recruiting uni students, staff and alumni to volunteer and help us deliver a range of programs to both primary and secondary school students at our partner schools across metropolitan Sydney. These programs have the specific focus of engaging students who have fallen behind in their classes, particularly in literacy. This year we have retained our Word-Up Literacy Program, Homework Clubs and Classroom Activity Facilitator roles while also introducing a Numeracy program aimed at helping students in early high school (years 7 and 8) with math.
A record number of participants helped make 2013 our biggest year to date with 82 volunteers delivering programs at 16 Sydney schools to 128 students! Alongside our in-school experiences with Compass, many of these students then got the chance to visit the University of Sydney's main campus on one or more of our events including the Year 3 "Discover Uni Day", the Year 7 "Explore Uni Days" and the Year 8 "Investig8 Uni Day".
We always appreciate the support of the schools that help us bring our programs and volunteers to them, particularly the Compass coordinators and principals. When asked about the most valued aspect of the program a teacher from one of the schools working with Compass in 2013 responded, "Providing students with special needs one-on-one learning assistance."
Huge thanks must go to all of the amazing volunteers who devote their time to assist school students across Sydney. The merits of the volunteer experience were highlighted by one of our 2013 volunteers, "By far the most valuable aspect of the program was the progress that was made by the students. A couple of the students I worked with managed to finish the entire program and that was very rewarding."
Compass will be looking to recruit more volunteers for 2014's in-school literacy and numeracy programs so please visit the volunteering section of our website and register your interest to volunteer next year. We look forward to bringing our programs to Compass partner schools in 2014.
