On the road again

15 March 2013

It can be hard to make it to an Open Day when you're six hours by car from Sydney. And it can be hard to find time to study when you have a schedule of farm chores like milking and feeding! But students in regional areas continue to find ways around these challenges, and last week the Social Inclusion Unit's work in regional NSW continued with a visit by Compass staff to Forbes High School.

Compass staff met with the Year 10, 11, and 12 students over two days for workshops on senior study, scholarships, and getting into university.

  • Year 10 Preparation for Senior Study workshop focuses on two of the most important study skills in the student toolkit - organization and time management. Students also find out more about uni courses, ATAR, and financial assistance.
  • Year 11 Thinking Ahead workshop provides information about equity and merit scholarships, and encourages students to think about what kind of work is involved in a scholarship application. The Forbes students completed an activity to help them figure out what skills and personal qualities could be developed by the extracurricular activities they were already involved with, or might be able to take up in Year 11 and 12.
  • Year 12 Promote Yourself workshop focuses on how to craft a personal statement for a scholarship or employment application. Students practice the often difficult task of writing about themselves, and examine the rhetorical strategies of successful scholarship applicants.

Forbes students enjoyed finding out "what university offers and what I need to do to go to university... to achieve." Following on the heels of the Year 12's visit to the University in February, we look forward to seeing some of them continue their achievements here on campus.

The Compass team thanks Forbes High School, especially Year 12 coordinator Anna Townend, and the senior students we met with during our visit. To find out more about our programs, please contact Compass Administration.
