Year 8 students 'Investig8' Uni

"What are my interests? What do I enjoy doing? What inspires me? What are my options for the future?"

These are the questions Year 8 students reflected upon at the Compass Year 8 INVESTIG8 UNI visit, on Wednesday 21 August. 479 Year 8 students from Compass partner schools came to investigate their potential and the opportunities available at university.

Compass events are designed to contribute to the conversations around post-school options and higher education. This year's event, a key component of the Explore Year 7-8 stage of the Compass program, was the largest in Compass history and marked Holroyd High School's first participation on the program.

In response to feedback from schools, Compass staff developed lesson materials for teachers to deliver to their students prior to the visit. The lesson created a much more meaningful experience for students, who had the opportunity to select two activities of interest under broad themes of Creative & Constructive, Get into Business, Delve into History & Nature, Get Scientific, Promote Change and Focus on Health.

The day started with an inspiring welcome from Dr Jayne Weller, a University of Sydney graduate in Veterinary Science. Her journey to higher education, and her message of persistence, resonated with the Year 8 students on the day and has been featured in the Bridges to Higher Education TV documentary series Models of Achievement.

Students were escorted to one of 23 activities spanning the Camperdown campus including demonstrations and hands-on activities in architecture, engineering, visual arts, animation, music, business studies, archaeology, molecular bioscience, law and order, sustainability, physiotherapy, nursing and rock climbing.

At the day's end, students were aware of the opportunities a university degree can provide to them; and understood how their interests can link to future study and career options, and how they can make their own choices about higher education. They were able to investigate and obtain a better understanding of the possibilities at university and possibilities, an inspirational experience captured by a student from Liverpool Girls High School "[enjoyed] the activities... and the speech given by Jayne Weller [the most] because she exactly who I have always and still want to be".
