Message from the Vice-Chancellor: Impact of the Defence Trade Controls Bill on research

10 October 2012

Many of you will be aware of the University's serious concerns about the implications of the Defence Trade Controls Bill currently before the Federal Parliament.

The Bill seeks among other things to introduce new measures to control 'intangible transfers' of information about technology and services related to items on the Defence and Strategic Goods List (DSGL). Professor Jill Trewhella has been stoutly defending academic freedom in a series of meetings over the last six months, ably supported by researchers from the Faculty of Science and the Sydney Medical School and Tim Payne, our Director of Policy Analysis and Communication.

Today the Sydney Morning Herald has published an opinion piece by Professor Trewhella. Related stories have appeared in The Age and the Canberra Times.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Spence
