New guidelines for non-discriminatory language

9 August 2013

The University has published updated guidelines on how to use non-discriminatory language in communications and publications.

The guidelines also suggest ways to avoid language that could be offensive in the areas of:

  • age
  • disability
  • ethnicity and race (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander terminology)
  • gender
  • illness
  • sexuality.

The University's Brand and Marketing Services team worked closely with the Staff and Student Equal Opportunity Unit to produce the guidelines.
