It was a discussion with Associate Professor Jonathan Arthur from the University's Children's Medical Research Institute which prompted Campus Assist Officer Peter McAndrew to organising a fundraising event at the University for Jeans for Genes Day.

"I thought it was a worthwhile cause. I also thought it was important for the University to get involved considering our work in medical research," Peter said.

It was the first year Peter held the Jeans for Genes Day barbeque fundraiser and he managed to raise over $500 for the cause.

"It was a great success and I'm hoping next year it will be bigger and better," Peter said.

Vice Chancellor and Principal Dr Michael Spencewas at the event on Friday 2 August.

"Peter McAndrew has worked at the University for 25 years and had this great idea. It's fantastic to see the contribution our staff members are making to the community," Michael said.

Peter started working at the University when he was just 18, it was his first job after he finished high school.

"What I enjoy most about my job is helping the students. It's been great working at the University for the past 25 years. The atmosphere is great and I've enjoyed working with all the different staff members," Peter said.

"Everyone has been so generous with their time and support while I've been organising this event. I'd like to thank Ralph's Café for donating the food, the people from University Venues and the team at Campus Infrastructure and Services."
