Message from the Vice-Chancellor: Update on today's Enterprise Bargaining discussion

13 August 2013

I would like to provide you with an important update on the progress of negotiations with the unions over the proposed new Enterprise Agreement.

Today I met with the bargaining team, including representatives from the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU). In the meeting, I re-affirmed the University's offer of a salary increase of 2.9 percent per annum over four years. This increase will be backdated to 1 July 2013 provided agreement is reached by close of business on 30 August 2013.

In the context of challenging external factors, including economic uncertainty, federal government funding cuts and policy changes, and limitations on what the University can afford, this is a reasonable and sustainable deal.

It allows us to continue to be the Australian university with pay, conditions and benefits that lead the higher education sector, and maintain our reputation as a leader in teaching and research.

I urged the unions to discuss the detail of the proposal with their members and provide me with feedback as soon as possible. I will keep you informed about the unions' response.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Spence

Vice-Chancellor and Principal
