Final Change Plan

17 February 2012

You will already be aware that on 3 February, the University issued a Formal Change Proposal outlining proposed savings measures in relation to academic salaries and staffing-related administrative costs.

The proposal included changes to the process for reducing academic staffing costs, with more emphasis being placed on measures such as flexible options (including pre-retirement contracts) and natural attrition in addition to redundancy to achieve the budget savings required. Changes were also made to address some of the concerns which had been expressed about the assessment process.

Staff and unions were invited to comment on the Formal Change Proposal, and responses were received from 14 staff and from the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) and National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU). A meeting of the Management and Staff Consultative Committee was held on 13 February 2012 and meetings with the unions were also held on 8 February (NTEU), 16 February (CPSU/NTEU) and late this afternoon (CPSU).

While those commenting on the proposal opposed it, the University has concluded that it has no option but to proceed with the proposed savings measures. The measures to be introduced are set out in the Final Change Plan.

Comments are invited on the draft implementation plan in Part 4 of the Final Change Plan. Comments should submitted by email to by 29 February 2012.

Yours sincerely

Michael Spence
