Changes to superannuation tax law

21 June 2012

Changes to the tax treatment of some superannuation contributions will come into effect from 1 July.

While many staff will not be affected, it is important that you familiarise yourself with the changes, especially if the superannuation contributions made on your behalf by the University, and any pre-tax/salary sacrifice contributions made by you will exceed $25,000 during 2012-13.

For information on all the changes, please visit the Australian Tax Office website, the UniSuper website or State Super Financial Services website. You can also attend a free UniSuper seminar on understanding contributions and caps.

The circumstances for each individual will be different. Changes to your contribution arrangements might affect your superannuation benefits, insurance cover and net salary. Changes cannot be made in retrospect, so it is important that you consider your situation as early as possible. You are also encouraged to seek independent financial advice. UniSuper Advice or State Super Financial Services can provide financial planning services.

If you would like to make changes to your own superannuation contributions, such as changing from pre-tax to post-tax contributions, changing the amount you are contributing or salary sacrificing, or explore more flexibility in relation to the employer contributions, visit the Human Resources (HR) website or email the superannuation team in the HR Service Centre.
