Dean's welcome

Professor Donna Waters

Welcome to The University of Sydney Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to The University of Sydney Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery (Sydney Nursing School). I am truly excited about continuing the excellent work of Sydney Nursing School in education, research and scholarship and deeply value our strong relationships with clinical and professional partners, both within Australia and internationally.

While the overall number of nurses and midwives in Australia has increased over the past decade, the demands of contemporary healthcare continue to generate shortages within particular specialty and geographic areas. Nursing shortages will become most acute in Australia between 2020 and 2025. The future of health and healthcare relies on nurses and midwives who are competent to work with people in many and varied contexts – professionals who can deliver the most appropriate care, at the right time, in the right place. Our vision at the Sydney Nursing School is to explore and expand ways of thinking about teaching and to research the practices and outcomes of nursing and midwifery in partnership with people and their families. Our programs continuously undergo academic and industry review to ensure that they remain relevant and focus on what is important to those seeking care and support at times of illness or vulnerability. Our aim is to prepare graduates who are personally and professional aware.

There are many new developments in health education and research on the horizon at the University of Sydney. The health faculties of the University – Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy and Health Sciences are working together to reconceptualise health and healthcare as a whole of university concern. In facing the challenges to our health and education systems, we believe that flexibility, interprofessional and integrated practice are vital not only to surviving change, but also to thriving in change.

At Sydney Nursing School, we seek to ensure that the focus of our work remains aligned to the genuine needs of people and their communities. Whether you are just beginning your studies with us, looking to advance your career in health, returning as an associate or alumni, or just visiting – you are most welcome. I encourage you to explore the many experiences available to you at Sydney Nursing School and the University of Sydney and invite you to follow the progress of our coursework and research programs and the many creative and exciting ventures of our staff, students and associates by regularly visiting our web and Facebook pages.
