Emergency nursing is an exciting and challenging specialty that has evolved over the past 35 years. It requires nurses to deliver care to a diverse population experiencing acute and sometimes life-threatening conditions. The acuity of patients, complexity of care and degree of technological interventions used are variable. Emergency nurses must be able to anticipate and prioritise patient care, provide accurate assessment, intervention and effective ongoing management, often in a busy, autonomous and stressful environment.
This course focuses on enabling the student to develop proficiency in emergency patient assessment and management. It is also designed to help the student gain skills to effectively use research and determine reliable information as the basis of their clinical reasoning. The emergency nursing specialty course at Sydney Nursing School, University of Sydney is intended to assist registered nurses working in this area to be clinical leaders by integrating individual clinical experience with relevant evidence to produce information that can be used to inform the clinical practice of others in this dynamic environment.
