Examination information
End of semester examinations are timetabled by the University. Timetables become available on the University website approximately 23 weeks before the examination period. If you have an examination clash should apply for a change of timetable at the Student Centre, Jane Foss Russell Building, Darlington Campus. It is the student's responsibility to check the examination timetable regularly.
All students are allocated a room and seat number for exams held on the Camperdown/Darlington Campus, and a room number for exams held on the Mallett Street Campus. Room and seat numbers will be available on the University website. It is the student's responsibility to report any problems with the room or seat number prior to the exam.
Examination policies and procedures are available through the
Examinations Office. A draft examination timetable is produced toward the middle of each semester. You should view the Examinations Office page regularly for updates.
Illness or misadventure
If you are unable to attend an exam, or your performance in an exam is affected, due to illness or misadventure you are advised to submit a request for special consideration.
Special arrangements for assessment and examination
Special arrangements may be made available to any student enrolled at the University of Sydney (in accordance with 2011 Assessment Policy) who is unable to meet assessment requirements or attend examinations because of one or more of the following situations:
- essential religious commitments or essential beliefs (including cultural and ceremonial commitments)
- compulsory legal absence (eg jury duty, court summons, etc)
- sporting or cultural commitments, including political/union commitments, where the student is representing the University, state or nation
- birth or adoption of a child
- Australian defence force or emergency service commitments (including Army Reserve)
- disability (need to be registered with Disability Services)
Personal commitments, such as travel, family matters or work commitments are not covered by this policy. In certain circumstances, where a postgraduate post-registration student lives overseas or in a state other than NSW or the ACT, a student may be permitted to take external examinations where approved by a Director Postgraduate Advanced Studies. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain the approval through the course coordinator and to organise the exam to be conducted at another University. Any associated costs for this service will be payable by the student (costs will include up to $200 administration fees and any costs from the host institution).
Re-marking
Re-marking is defined as an independent assessment of a piece of written work that has already been assessed.
The Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) shall determine whether to allow a re-mark for a particular piece of written work.
Request for a re-mark will only be considered if the request is:
- submitted on the appropriate form
- accompanied by a letter addressed to the Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) stating the grounds for the request, along with a clean copy of the work, together with the original piece of work as it was marked
- received within five working days of the original result for the particular piece of written work being made available to the student. (In the case of international students who are studying by distance education this means within five days of receipt of the marked piece of work by the student.)
Please return your re-marking request with any supporting documentation to Nursing Student Services.
In considering an application for a re-mark, the Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) will consider the student's case with respect to:
- the stated grounds for the request; and
- any procedural issues that may be relevant.
Please note the following:
- The outcome of the re-mark will be final.
- There will be no re-marking of clinical performance as assessed within the clinical nursing laboratories or clinical settings.
- Re-marking will not apply in circumstances where a student has applied for special consideration. An approved application for special consideration will take priority over an application for re-marking.
- There will be no re-marking of examination papers.
Special consideration and supplementary exams
If you believe your performance in an assessment has been or will be affected by serious illness or misadventure, you may seek special consideration. Please note that submitting a request does not automatically mean special consideration will be granted.
Toward the end of each semester, a supplementary exam timetable will be produced by the School. Supplementary exams are only available if you have been given permission to sit a supplementary exam (due to an earlier absence, or special consideration).
