Biographical details
I joined Sydney Nursing School in February 2010 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Mental Health Nursing and became a Senior Lecturer – Mental Health Nursing in February 2011. Prior to my appointments at Sydney Nursing School, I worked for over 15 years in acute and rehabilitation inpatient mental health services. During that time I held various positions as a Nurse Educator, Clinical Nurse Consultant and Project Officer. I also worked on a number of clinical research studies.

Research interests
My research interests include core aspects of mental health nursing practice, physical health needs of mental health consumers, and mental health consumer and carer expertise. My doctoral study explored how Australian nurse leaders experienced and conceptualised mentorship for leadership.
Teaching areas
Teaching:
The core subject areas of specialist mental health nursing, with particular interest in the areas of therapeutic use of self and development of therapeutic relationships; mental health rehabilitation and recovery; mental health nursing clinical documentation and clinical handover; planning, implementation and evaluation of psychotherapeutic interventions; and nursing management of nicotine-dependence in mental health consumers.
Research:
Nursing mentorship and leadership; person-centred mental health nursing care; the physical health care needs of people experiencing mental illness, and the integration of mental health nursing practice with consumer and carer expertise. I use qualitative and mixed methods research with particular interest in hermeneutic phenomenology.
