Outcomes and resource utilisation of trauma patients discharged from the Emergency Department following trauma team activation
The project consists of two parts, with the first part based at Liverpool Hospital (for which there has already been ethics approval). The second part of the study would involve the comparison of data between Liverpool Hospital (a one-tiered trauma activation system) and St George hospital (a two-tiered trauma activation system) over a 6-month period.
The one-tier activation system is relatively resource intensive, requiring multiple staff to attend the ED for every trauma patient. We aim to look at whether this system confers any benefit to patients with relatively minor injury (ie those patients who are subsequently discharged), which is currently not known. Comparing the effectiveness of these activation systems will allow the appropriate allocation of hospital resources.
