Andrea is a registered nurse with a strong background in intensive care nursing practice. She has worked as a clinician, educator and researcher in critical care nursing in both Australia and overseas.

Areas of expertise

Andrea has research interests in critical care nursing practice and knowledge translation. Her main focus of research is in the area of nutritional therapy in critical illness and translating research in intensive care nursing practice. She has expertise in factor analysis and the case study method.

Current research projects

At present Andrea is working on the following projects:

  • Factors impacting nutritional delivery in critically ill adults
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to nutrition support in intensive care
  • The efficacy, cost-effectiveness an ecological impact of Selective Decontamination of the Digestive tract in critcally ill patients treated in the Intensive Care Unit: The SuDDICU study
  • Information use by critical care nurses clinical decision making
  • The impact of uncertainty on patient decision making
  • Impact of protocols and guidelines on nurse decision making
  • The use of respiratory assessment tools in the nursing evaluation of infants with bronchiolitis, and
  • The effectiveness of the daily topical application of EMLA cream to the wound bed of painful chronic leg ulcers.

Community work

Andrea is an Associate Editor of Australian Critical Care and a Member on the Australian College of Critical Care Nursing Research Advisory Panel. Andrea is a member of a multidisciplinary team from the University of Sydney, Royal North Shore Hospital and the Ministry of Health, Timor Leste, involved in an education program aimed at critical care capacity building in East Timor.
