Biographical details

Elizabeth Denney-Wilson is conjoint Professor of Nursing in the Sydney Local Health District and Sydney Nursing School. She has academic qualifications in nursing, public health and epidemiology. Since completing her PhD in 2005, her research has focused on obesity prevention and management with a focus on the role of nurses and the primary health care setting. Her research funding has included a Centre of Research Excellence grant as well as other category 1 funding. Elizabeth has long term collaborations with researchers across a broad range of health disciplines from UNSW, Deakin, UTS and QUT. She has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed papers in the last 10 years and has presented her work at national and international conferences. Elizabeth supervises PhD, Masters by research and Honours students and has had one BMid Honours and two PhD completions in the last year.

Current projects

2016- 2017: Management and prevention of child obesity in primary care: developing resources for GPs and Practice Nurses. NSW Premier’s Priority Task Force. I have been consulting to the Premier’s priority task force developing strategies to improve prevention and management of child obesity.

2016-current: My Baby Now: version 2 of the CRE funded “Growing healthy” app to provide parents with support to establish healthy (rather than excess) weight gain. This project is the pilot for a NHMRC partnership grant between Deakin University, UTS, the Raising Children Network and the NSW Ministry of Health under development for submission in 2017.

2016-current: Fit for the future. A health promotion project embedded in new graduate program for nurses aiming to improve diet and physical activity behaviours and wellbeing. UTS faculty grant.

2014-current: My baby myself: an exploration of Arabic women’s infant feeding knowledge and practice. BMid Honours project.

2014-current: The Tressilian feeding study: a mixed methods study of infant feeding and weight gain in infants cared for in the Tressilian service. UTS ECR grant.

2014-current: Weight gain in nursing students: an exploration of the eating habits and weight gain in the first year of university among nursing students. UTS BN Honours project.

2016-current: Child weight management: whose business is it? This study, conducted in Rockhampton in Queensland explores the practices of primary care providers in the identification and management of excess weight in children.
