Biographical details

Judith has over 30 years experience in a range of research design and statistical analysis methodologies, with the last 23 years spent at Sydney Nursing School. Her career started in early human evolution, where a mentor advised her that if she wanted to study change in fossils over time, she would need to learn statistics. Judith found statistics to be enjoyable and useful, with data analysis her favourite part.

Judith is committed to making statistics accessible and enjoyable to all staff and students of Sydney Nursing School and to the wider health professional community as well. With statistics, interesting stories can be explored and told. Judith believes that like any language, statistics can be learned – every clinician has the potential to become statistically literate.

In her role, Judith provides statistical advice and guidance to staff and students of Sydney Nursing School. She is often invited to present guest lectures in various aspects of statistics within Sydney Nursing School and also externally, including regular annual statistical workshops at the Central Coast Local Health District and an intensive statistical workshop at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Singapore. She is a chief investigator on a current NHMRC grant ‘Evaluating a shared care pathway intervention to reduce chemotherapy outpatients' unplanned presentations to hospital’, in conjunction with Professor Kate White, Dr Heather Mackenzie and Professor Judy Simpson, among others.

Research interests

Judith has a long-standing interest in measuring and interpreting change over time which has led her to linear mixed models and missing data analysis. She is interested in all aspects of research, from conceptualisation, through to design, analysis and publication, whether it be a clinical trial or a small pilot study.
