Biographical details
I am a senior lecturer in pharmacology and clinical pharmacy at Sydney Nursing School. I am a registered pharmacist with a background in hospital pharmacy and an interest in promoting Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) with a focus on improving medication management in the elderly. I am a member of the Therapeutic Goods Committee and the Board member of the NSW Branch of the Society for Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA). I co-chair Medicines Use Research Australia, a national research interest group for researchers involved in drug utilisation and pharmacoepidemiological work. In addition I am the Oceania member of the drug utilisation executive group for the International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology research health services research special interest group.
My doctoral research focused on the validation and use of prescribing indicators for quality assessment in the management of asthma and heart failure.
Research interests
I have a strong interest in drug utilisation studies and pharmacoepidemiology, looking at medicine use and prescribing patterns in large populations. I have worked with a range of national and international databases to explore QUM issues and prescribing patterns both in the community and hospital settings. I am currently working on prescribing patterns in the elderly looking at both nursing home and community dwelling older populations. I collaborate with researchers in the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands looking at medicine use among nursing home residents. In addition to my work with drug utilisation databases I have an interest in promoting QUM across the hospital community interface. I currently have a number of drug utilisation and continuum of care projects available for interested postgraduate students.
I have also completed research with the Heart Foundation supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with heart failure. I led a team of researchers to develop a culturally and clinically appropriate health information book Living every day with my heart failure to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with Heart Failure better manage their condition.
