Biographical details

Professor Patanwala is Chair of Clinical Pharmacy and is jointly based at the University of Sydney School of Pharmacy and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. His research interests include critical care, emergency medicine, and patient safety. His research encompasses both the therapeutics of medications and optimisation of health services in the acute care setting.

Professor Patanwala is a registered pharmacist in the United States and most recently comes from the University of Arizona where he held a jointly funded position between the University’s College of Pharmacy and Banner University Medical Center. He also completed a Master of Public Health (Biostatistics) at the University of Arizona. He practiced as a pharmacist at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, where he supervised pharmacy students and residents in the emergency department and intensive care units. At the University of Arizona, he coordinated the final Pharmacotherapeutics course in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum and served as Assistant Director of Fellowship Programs in the Center for Health Outcomes and PharmacoEconomic Research (HOPE).

Professor Patanwala has been a recipient of local and national (U.S.) awards that span teaching, research, and service domains. He was elected Chair of the Emergency Medicine Practice and Research Network from the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (2015-16), which now includes more than 1000 members internationally. He has been involved in and led numerous committees and taskforces for the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and Society of Critical Care Medicine. Professor Patanwala serves as the contributing editor for research for the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.
