Biographical details
Dr Saini trained as a pharmacist at the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chandigarh, India (1990). She continued on to a path in research, starting with a Masters in the Discipline of Pharmaceutics (1992) at the same institute. Her master’s work involved exploring the mutagenicty of halogenated nitrobenzenes. After completing a master’s degree in Business Administration (1996, University of Western Sydney), she changed her research direction to exploring pharmacy health services, an area which strategically combines her pharmacy background and an understanding of management principles. Her PhD project focused on asthma (2004, University of Sydney), and since then Dr Saini has led and collaborated in implementing and evaluating several successful pharmacy-based models that involve screening (sleep disorders and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), patient self-management (allergic rhinitis, sleep disorders, asthma) and clinical audits (sleep medications), as well as pharmacovigilance (sleep medications).
Dr Saini is a registered pharmacist and practices in community settings. A fervent learner, she enjoys teaching and has taught pharmacy and management subjects. She has also completed a Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (2007, University of Sydney) to enhance her understanding of teaching principles.
Research interests
In her research career so far, Dr Saini has been involved in a systematic program of evidence generation to facilitate national implementation of a pharmacy-based asthma disease state management model that she developed in her doctoral work. Her research has showcased the clinical, humanistic and economic benefits of pharmacist-delivered care in asthma. The model developed by her has been cited internationally in prestigious reports and review.
Dr Saini has led and collaborated in implementing and evaluating several successful pharmacy-based models that involve screening/case detection (sleep disorders, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis (Cambodia), patient self-management (allergic rhinitis, sleep disorders, asthma) and clinical audits (sleep medications), as well as pharmacovigilance (sleep medications). In parallel with developing the pharmacy health services research profile, over the last few years she has embarked on developing the role of pharmacy in sleep health, and she is one of the few pharmacy-based researchers publishing in this area globally.
Her work and background have led her to conduct and supervise research in international settings, including India, Cambodia and Saudi Arabia, with an interest to develop and evaluate primary care health models for respiratory disease in varied health systems and socio-cultural settings.
