Biographical details

Dr George Qian Li is the Sesquicentenary Lecturer in Herbal Medicines, University of Sydney. He received his PhD from Sun Yat-sen University in 1988. He was a visiting scholar at the Chinese University of Hong Kong before coming to the University of Sydney in 1990, where he has worked ever since. Dr Li was the Coordinator of the Master of Herbal Medicines during 2000 and 2011. Dr Li is also a Member of Royal Australian Chemical Institute.

Dr Li’s research focuses on the quality control, chemistry and pharmacology of popular botanical medicines for the management of diabetes, using new theory and methods. The projects have been supported by national competitive grants including the National Institute of Complementary Medicines Collaborative Centre in Traditional Chinese Medicines, and the Australia-China Special Fund. He has received two awards in international conferences for his work. Dr Li has also proposed a system approach for bioactivity-led quality standardisation of botanical medicines.

Dr Li’s work has been published in 44 papers in peer review journals, nine book chapters, two patents and 100 conference abstracts. Dr Li has a Scopus H-index of 14 and a Citation count in excess of 100 in 2012. He is a regular peer reviewer for a number of high impact international journals, such as Current Medicinal Chemistry.
