Biographical details

Dr Jonathan Penm completed his PhD in 2014 evaluating hospital pharmacists’ influence on prescribing in numerous countries around the world, with a focus on the Western Pacific region. Dr Penm previously worked as a clinical hospital pharmacist and an antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist before completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the Unviersity of Cinicnnati, USA. During his fellowship, he explored factors affecting care coordination of adults in 11 high-income countries and evaluated the appropriate use of opioids in Emergency Departments (ED).

Dr Penm currently serves as the Assistant Secretary of the Hospital Pharmacy Section, International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) that represents over 3 milllion pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists around the world. He has also previously served as chair of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) NSW branch and is actively involved in hospital pharmacy research. He is interested in increasing the quality of care patients’ experience in different healthcare settings and their transition between them.

Research interests

Dr Penm is passionate about improving patients’ experiences in different healthcare settings. His research interests include evaluating clinical pharmacy services in the hospital setting. Currently, Dr Penm is involved in a variety or research topics. This includes the evaluation of opioid prescribing in Emergency Departments and the access to naloxone. He is also involved in defining and evaluating the different tasks involved in medication reconciliation to ensure continuity of care to patient’s medication regimen.

Dr Penm also continues to collaborate with his colleagues in the USA in medication safety issues. He is currently idientfying risk factors and strategies to reduce intravenous compounding medication errors using automated systems.
