Biographical details

Dr Smith is a research psychologist with an interest in patient self-management of chronic conditions. Her work in this field centres on the development and testing of models of patient-centred chronic condition self-management and goal-setting. These models have been trialled in community pharmacies and GP practices, and are currently being trialled in the mental health and physiotherapy sectors. Dr Smith has been either Chief or Principal Investigator on national competitive grants totalling over $6 million infunding in the past seven years. The goal-setting model’s efficacy in primary care is demonstrated through its incorporation into two national implementation projects for asthma and type 2 diabetes, and a current NHMRC asthma project.

Over the last eight years Dr Smith’s other significant contribution to the field includes a longitudinal study into adolescents’ experiences in the self-management of type 1 diabetes (ARC Linkage Grant). In addition, in 2011 she collaborated with colleagues from Monash University researching people’s experiences of depression, including young adults. Dr Smith’s international contributions include a five-year relationship with the Health Experiences Research Group (HERG) at Oxford University, and a current collaboration with colleagues from Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Southampton universities trialling her goal-setting model for chronic allergic rhinitis. She is also a foundation member of DIPEx (Database of Personal Experiences of Health and Illness) International and DIPEx Australia,

Dr Smith has been supervising honours, masters and doctoral students since 2002, investigating patient focused self-management of chronic disease and student motivation.

Research interests

  • Development and testing of models of patient-centred chronic condition self-management and goal-setting.
  • Motivational approaches students take to their learning and how this influences the quality of their learning and academic performance; investigating their study strategies, motivations for learning, and reasons for study.
  • Personal experiences of health and illness.
