Biographical details
Romano's research focuses on medication safety and toxicology in the context of complex systems. A number of his projects seek to understand relationships between drug features and toxicity, through linking post-marketing observational data with information about pharmacokinetics and physical and structural elements of drug molecules and their metabolites. He has supervised a number of research students who have explored these associations for drug-induced liver injury, neuropsychiatric effects (including parasomnias) and, more recently, cardiac arrhythmias.
Romano is particularly interested in developing methods for integrating knowledge from disparate data sources (toxicological, chemical, pharmacological and biological) to reveal mechanisms underlying idiosyncratic adverse drug reactions.
A separate group of his research group's projects focus on practices, behaviours, systems and policies associated with preventable medication misadventure in the complex environment of primary healthcare systems. These studies involve qualitative and quantitative (observational) approaches to expose factors that contribute to medication error and the associated relationships between human and systems factors.
The systems focus of this research seeks to unravel the complexity associated with drug toxicity and to develop new approaches to studying and addressing failures in practice, systems and policy in healthcare that conspire to produce unintended harm to patients from medicines.
Romano is actively involved in teaching and his interests are in pharmacokinetics, medication safety, quality use of medicines, pharmacoepidemiology and extemporaneous dispensing. He often integrates his clinical experience in his teaching to bring relevance to students in understanding complex concepts.
