Scholarships in the Faculty of Pharmacy
Undergraduate scholarships
The University of Sydney offers a range of undergraduate scholarships. These are generally awarded based on a combination of school examination results, ATAR, and other factors. Application forms and brochures are sent out to school careers advisers in Australia in early August each year and applications close in September each year.
The University also offers scholarships to continuing undergraduate students based on merit. For further information about scholarships, please consult the University’s main Scholarships website.

University-wide Scholarships
There are a wide variety of University-wide scholarships and grants available to local and international research students.
Faculty Prizes
The Faculty of Pharmacy offers prizes to continuing undergraduate students based on merit. There is no application process for prizes, students who have been awarded a prize based on merit will be notified.
UNDERGRADUTE SCHOLARSHIPS
Blooms the Chemist - John Sidgreaves Scholarship
Background: This scholarship was established to honour Mr John Sidgreaves for his commitment to the faculty and his outstanding contributions to the profession of community pharmacy.
Who is eligible to apply: Domestic students
This scholarship is available to a third year domestic undergraduate student who is:
- entering their fourth and final year of the degree next year
- from a lower socio-economic background (as determined by the Universities Admissions Centre - UAC)
- has a minimum credit average in the first three years of the degree
- has a proven interest in community pharmacy as demonstrated by full-time or part-time employment in a pharmacy for a minimum duration of one year
Value: The scholarship is valued at $5000
How to apply: Applications are through UAC Equity Scholarships.
A list of potential nominees will be compiled by the Scholarships Office in collaboration with the UAC. The Dean will then review the applicants and choose the best candidate based on the criteria and particularly taking into account the fourth criteria of a demonstrated interest in community pharmacy.

POSTGRADUATE COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarship for citizens of Timor Leste.
Background: The Faculty of Pharmacy offers one scholarship per year to citizens of Timor Leste to undertake the graduate entry Master of Pharmacy program.
Who is eligible to apply: Citizens of Timor Leste. Applicants must have the support of the Timor-Leste Government.

Value: This scholarship provides full tuition fees and living expenses.
How to apply: Applicants must:
- have a prior bachelor’s degree
- meet the minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirements OR
have sat the Graduate Australian Medical Admissions Test (GAMSAT) OR
have sat the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) - meet a minimum of 42 out of 54 credit points, or equivalent, in seven prerequisite subjects at university level
- have English language proficiency (if relevant).

POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS.
Faculty of Pharmacy PhD Scholarship
Background: Faculty of Pharmacy PhD Scholarships (FPPS) are available on a highly competitive basis for domestic students commencing a full-time PhD at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Who is eligible to apply: Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or an Australian permanent resident by the scholarship closing date. Applicants must have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours (or H1 equivalent results) or have completed a four-year degree with an outstanding record of professional and/or research achievements since graduation.

W H and Elizabeth M Deane Pharmaceutical Fund PhD Scholarship
Background: William Houison Deane was a great contributor to the University of Sydney during his lifetime, and in 1956 created the W H and Elizabeth M Deane Pharmaceutical Fund.
Who is eligible to apply: Domestic students commencing a full-time PhD at the Faculty of Pharmacy for research in the area of direct pain relieving drugs. Applicants must have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours (or H1 equivalent results) or have completed a four-year degree with an outstanding record of professional and/or research achievements since graduation. Applicants with a Bachelors and Masters degree (predominately by coursework, but with enough research components to be accepted into the PhD program) are also eligible to be considered.
Value: The scholarship will be valued at the same rate as the Australian Postgraduate Award, and will be indexed annually. Successful applicants must apply for externally funded scholarships, such as Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), University of Sydney Postgraduate Award (UPA) and NHMRC Scholarships where eligible.
How to apply: Application for this scholarship is automatic upon application for an APA/UPA through The University of Sydney Scholarships Office.

Elizabeth Wunsch Postgraduate Research Scholarships
Background: The Elizabeth Wunsch Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Pharmacy was established in 1982 by a bequest from Elizabeth Wunsch.
Who is eligible to apply: Domestic and international students commencing a full-time PhD at the Faculty of Pharmacy for pharmaceutical research. Applicants must have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours (or H1 equivalent results) or have completed a four-year degree with an outstanding record of professional and/or research achievements since graduation. Applicants with a Bachelors and Masters degree (predominately by coursework, but with enough research components to be accepted into the PhD program) are also eligible to be considered.
Value: The scholarship shall be valued at the same rate as the University of Sydney Postgraduate Award (UPA), and indexed annually. Successful applicants must apply for externally funded scholarships where eligible.
How to apply: Application for the above scholarship is automatic upon application for a APA/UPA or IPRS through The University of Sydney Scholarships Office - Please note this scholarship is not available for 2013.
The Ross Brown Postgraduate Scholarship
Background: The Ross Brown Postgraduate Scholarship was established in 2007 with a donation by Mr Ross Brown, AM RFD ED to enable those of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage, or those conducting research in the fields of complementary and herbal medicines to engage in postgraduate research studies in the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sydney.
Who is eligible to apply: Domestic students of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage, or those conducting research in the fields of complementary and herbal medicines. Applicants must have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours (or H1 equivalent results) or have completed a four-year degree with an outstanding record of professional and/or research achievements since graduation. Applicants with a Bachelors and Masters degree (predominately by coursework, but with enough research components to be accepted into the PhD program) are also eligible to be considered.
Value: The scholarship shall be valued at the same rate as the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), and indexed annually.

The Pharmacy Alumni Postgraduate Scholarship
Background: The Pharmacy Alumni Postgraduate Scholarship, established by a donation by Mr Ross Brown, AM RFD ED to support Higher Research Degree students in the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sydney.
Who is eligible to apply: Domestic students. Preference shall be given to those candidates conducting research with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Applicants must have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours (or H1 equivalent results) or have completed a four-year degree with an outstanding record of professional and/or research achievements since graduation. Applicants with a Bachelors and Masters degree (predominately by coursework but with enough research components to be accepted into the PhD program) are also eligible to be considered.
Value: The scholarship shall be valued at the same rate as the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), and indexed annually. Successful applicants must apply for externally funded scholarships, such as Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), University of Sydney Postgraduate Award (UPA) and NHMRC Scholarships where eligible.

SCHOLARSHIPS OPEN TO UNDERGRADUTE AND POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS
Rural Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme.
Background: The Rural Pharmacy Scholarships have been established to provide financial support to encourage and enable students from rural and remote communities to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies in pharmacy at University level.
Who is eligible to apply: Domestic students
Applicants must meet the following preliminary eligibility criteria. The applicant must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Be enrolled as a full-time student in a pharmacy Undergraduate or Graduate degree at an Australian University that leads to a registerable qualification as a pharmacist.
- Have resided in a defined rural area for a minimum of five consecutive years, or eight cumulative years from the age of five years.
- Be a member of the student Rural Health Club or a member of the Universities affiliated Rural Health Club.
Value: There are up to 30 scholarships offered annually, with a value of $10,000 per annum per student (ie. $40,000 per student over a four year period).
How to apply: Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of individual student application, supplied on a standard application form, which will be assessed against eligibility criteria, as detailed in the Guidelines provided on the Pharmacy Guild of Australia website.
Scholarship recipients are encouraged to seek employment in rural and remote areas following graduation.

Summer Vacation Scholarships
Background: During the summer period the Faculty of Pharmacy is offering a number of Summer Vacation Research Scholarships to students.
These scholarships provide students with experience in research that might not be available elsewhere in their degree. By gaining an insight into the research process, students have the opportunity to see if they are interested in pursuing further studies or a career in a research environment.
Who is eligible to apply: Local and international students currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework pharmacy, science, medical or equivalent physical or natural science degree in Australian and New Zealand universities.
How to apply: Applications are invited from:
- 4 year degree – 2nd and 3rd year students (preference given to 3rd year students)
- 3 year degree – 2nd year students
- 2 year graduate entry degree – 1st year students
The scholarships are available for up to 8 weeks between December and February, with a stipend of $200 per week (Find out if your stipend will be tax free).
Applications will be assessed on the basis of the academic merit of the applicant and the quality of the application by a panel of academic staff. The application process may also include an interview.

Pharmacy Cricket Scholarship
Background: Pharmacy Cricket have made available two scholorships to any student studying at a pharmacy school or university in Australia.
Who is eligible to apply: Any pharmacy undergraduate or postgraduate student. Applicants do NOT have to have any interest or involvement with cricket to apply.
Value: $2500 per student
