Academic and Research - What’s it like to work for us?

With an international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research, the University of Sydney is not only Australia’s first tertiary institution, but the number one research university in the nation. As a member of the prestigious Group of 8 Universities, we are proud to contribute to the growth of intellectual, social, cultural and economic excellence in Australia.

For over 150 years we have attracted the very highest calibre of students; attributable in no small part to the truly outstanding expertise of our academic and research staff. The next decade is one of challenge and opportunity, in which we will build on our position as Australia's premier university and leader in Australian higher education.

Our aspiration is to achieve:

  • clear leadership as Australia's premier university in research, learning and teaching and the student experience
  • acknowledgment and ranking as one of the top universities in the Asia/Pacific region, and
  • recognition and ranking in the top universities around the world.

For us, this ambition is known as 1:5:40, and our highly valued Academic and Research staff play a crucial role in our ability to achieve it.

To date, our unparalleled achievement in research has resulted in significant funding from both the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council. Also, we boast more than 150 research centres and institutes, are a core partner in 13 federal government-funded Co-operative Research Centres, and a supporting participant in two others. We have a number of high profile research and Federation Fellows who play a key role in our ongoing research and academic achievement.

It is without question that ours is a collegial environment in which independence, autonomy and freedom of debate, thrive. We offer a supportive infrastructure for people with a disability and strive to remain a respected and progressive employer of choice for women.
