Research programs: how to apply

Applying for a research course at Sydney is a four-step process:

1. Academic qualifications

To apply for a higher degree by research (HDR), which includes our MPhil and PhD courses, you must have completed an honours degree, as master's by research degree or a master's by coursework program with a minor thesis component.

2. Find a supervisor

Visit Research Supervisor Connect , which lists all University research opportunities currently accepting new students.

Search through more than 1000 research opportunities, read about supervisors’ areas of interest and expertise, and make initial contact with them.

3. Research proposal

After finding a potential supervisor, you must develop and submit a research proposal. The supervisor will read and comment on your proposal, and indicate if they are willing to supervise you before you submit your application.

4. Submit an application

Once you have refined your research proposal, you must complete an application form and submit it to the relevant faculty office.
