Synopsis

Asthma is a chronic disease which can affect the day to day lives of individuals of any age. Asthma can be successfully managed to minimise the impact it has on the individual, the community and the health care system. Health care professionals in the community, such as the pharmacist and the general practitioner have fundamental roles in the management of asthma however, little research has investigated the way in which they might work together to improve the management of asthma for people with the condition. Research has shown that there are many benefits, not only to the patient, but also the health care professional if a team approach is taken.

This project will focus on the role of different health care professionals associated with asthma care. In particular, the integration of the pharmacist as an important member of the asthma care team will be investigated. It is anticipated that this project will help identify ways in which the proven impact of the pharmacist on asthma care can be incorporated into a team-based approach in the community.
