About Professor Ron Trent
Ron is focussed on understanding the complex interactions that occur between genes and the environment and so lead to the important non-Mendelian genetic disorders that occur in the community.
Professor Trent is a nationally recognised leader in the field of human molecular genetics who has pioneered many developments in this area including DNA testing facilities, and education of postgraduates in laboratory genetics.
Ron Trent is Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University of Sydney and Director of the Department of Molecular & Clinical Genetics at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He is Executive Director of the University’s and Hospitals SUPAMAC (a high throughput DNA analysis service). Ron graduated in Medicine from the University of Sydney and undertook research work in the University of Oxford prior to returning to Sydney to work in haematology and subsequently genetics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and a Fellow of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia. Presently, he is a member of the Board of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney. He is Chairman of the NHMRC’s Human Genetics Advisory Committee, a member of the NHMRC’s Research Committee and a member of the NHMRC’s Council. He maintains an active research interest in molecular genetics of a number of human disorders. Many of his students have now assumed national and international leadership roles in their fields.
