Central research support is provided by the Research Portfolio. Various other University bodies also contribute to research support.

The Research Portfolio provides services to support and assist researchers and academic leaders in the university with processes for managing research.

Provides leadership, management oversight and coordination of major strategic collaborative research and education initiatives for the University, with a particular focus on areas where cross-faculty engagement and external partnerships are key to the academic enterprise. Major responsibilities include the core research facilities program and HMR+ implementation.

Provides strategic and practical advice to researchers and academic units on research development and collaboration strategies, including multi-disciplinary and multi-faculty initiatives and investment in University research infrastructure; as well as strategic and technical support to researchers applying for funding. 

Commercial Development and Industry Partnerships
Director: Andrew Tindell

Provides strategic and practical advice to researchers and academic units on commercialisation strategies and help for researchers to find the right partners and capitalise on their ideas and innovation; as well as help researchers manage their intellectual property.

Provides practical, hands-on assistance in navigating research grant applications, negotiating research contracts and consultancies with industry and getting started once you are awarded funds.

Research Integrity and Ethics Administration
Director: Rebecca Halligan

Promotes the responsible conduct of research and manages the University's ethical and other research compliance obligations, the governance of Clinical Trials and delivery of Laboratory Animal Services.

Research Reporting, Analysis, Data and Systems
Director: Nathaniel Lewis

Provides University-wide reports on research and research performance to meet internal and external requirements including inform strategic decisions; develops and manages systems to enable collection and analysis of research performance data and to support research across the University; and to inform strategic decisions and planning.

Other support providers

Corporate Finance (Research)

Corporate Finance opens new research accounts and provides financial management of the DVC (Research)’s portfolio. This encompasses the financial responsibilities for HERDC, ARC, NHMRC and centrally funded schemes.

Corporate Finance also provides financial leadership and direction to the senior managers and team leaders within Research Portfolio and across the research community.

Talent and Organisational Development

Talent and Organisational Development provides a number of programs for researchers, including programs catering to early career researchers.


The University Library facilitates and supports the research programs of the University through a range of resources, services and infrastructure.

The Library provides an extensive array of information resources to ensure researchers have access to the latest research in their field. These resources include print and electronic collections of journals, books and databases that are networked to Sydney researchers irrespective of location and time.

Expert faculty liaison librarians for every school and department provide direct assistance to researchers in the discovery and use of resources.

Sydney eScholarship provides services and infrastructure supporting eResearch initiatives, scholarly publishing and open access as well as the programs of the Research Portfolio. The Library is a central service of the University
