Your responsibilities

The Chief Investigator is ultimately responsible for the welfare of every animal allocated to an approved project. Nevertheless, all persons involved with the use of animals must accept responsibility of those animals at all times.

According to the Code:

3.1.1 Investigators and teachers have personal responsibility for all matters related to the welfare of the animals they use and must act in accordance with all requirements of the Code. This responsibility begins when an animal is allocated to a project and ends with its fate at the completion of the project.

  1. Be aware of your responsibilities in the use of animals
  2. Obtain your animals appropriately
  3. Monitor your animals
  4. Keep records
  5. Report annually and obtain renewal
  6. Request approval for modifications to approved projects
  7. Report adverse incidents
  8. Know what to do in an emergency
