Development Grant provides funding support to individual researchers and/or research teams, to undertake health and medical research at the proof-of-principle or pre-seed stage, which specifically drives towards a commercial outcome within a five year timeframe.

Applicants must secure at least one industry/commercial partner and as part of the application to demonstrate how the industry/commercial partner/s will contribute to, and be involved in the advancement of the proposed Development Grant.

Changes to the scheme

The scope of the Development Grants scheme has been revised to focus on research at the proof-of-principle or pre-seed stage that is likely to result in protected IP and in commercialization within a 5 year timeframe.

Applications that meet the criteria below will be deemed ineligible and excluded from consideration:

  • Research that is fundable through the Project Grants scheme
  • Projects containing a significant clinical trial component
  • Applications that are the same or similar to any application submitted to other NHMRC funding schemes in the same funding year
  • Research that is beyond the proof of concept stage

Additional changes for 2016:

There is no specific limit to funding for each application under the NHMRC Development Grant scheme.  Applicants are advised to clearly justify the requested budget paying particular attention to any research cost(s) which may be atypical for the particular field of research.
