Examples of how to record your activities

Category: Research - ACG

Definition: All time spent on activities related to existing research projects which have been funded by a scheme listed on the ACG Register.

Includes:

  • Research time on projects funded by ACG
  • Conference/exhibition/seminar attendance related to ACG projects (current and previous grants)
  • Preparation of publications/presentations resulting from ACG projects (current and previous grants)
  • Administration of research funded by ACG (egfinance, ordering supplies, reporting requirements)
  • Preparation of curated events resulting from ACG projects (current and previous grants)
  • Specific team meetings on ACG projects
  • Review of work and outputs of colleague’s research related to ACG projects
  • Mentoring of ACG funded post doctorates and early career researchers (ECRs)
  • Research supervision of HDR students on ACG projects
  • Research supervision of ACG funded HDR students
  • Clinical work related to ACG projects

Does not include:

  • Grant application preparation
  • Activities related to projects not funded by ACG sources

Category: Research - Other

Definition: All time spent on activities related to existing research projects NOT funded by ACG sources.

Includes:

  • Research time on projects funded by non-ACG grants
  • Research time on projects funded by internal grants
  • Research time on unfunded projects
  • Conference/exhibition/seminar attendance related to non-ACG projects
  • Preparation of publications/presentations resulting from non-ACG grants, internal grants and unfunded projects
  • Preparation of curated events resulting from non-ACG grants, internal grants and unfunded projects
  • Administration of research funded by non-ACG and/or internal grants (egfinance, ordering supplies, reporting requirements )
  • Specific team meetings on non-ACG research projects
  • Research Committees (School, Dept and/or Facility)
  • Faculty management roles related specifically to research
  • Review of work and outputs of colleague’s research related to non-ACG projects
  • Mentoring of non-ACG funded post doctorates and early career researchers (ECRs)
  • Research supervision of HDR students on non-ACG projects
  • Clinical work related to non-ACG projects

Does not include:

  • Research time towards a Postgraduate research degree
  • Grant application preparation

Category: Teaching

Definition: All time spent on activities related to teaching, whether face to face, online or mixed mode delivery.

Includes:

  • Undergraduate teaching
  • Postgraduate coursework teaching
  • Lecture and tutorial preparation
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate coursework marking
  • Administration related to teaching
  • Curriculum development
  • Review of student feedback

Does not include:

  • HDR supervision and training
  • Administration related to HDR students
  • Professional development activities relating to Teaching and Learning

Category: Research training

Definition: All time spent on supervising and training Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students and Honours by Research students.

Includes:

  • Training of HDR students
  • Review of HDR student theses
  • Review of HDR student publications
  • Meetings with HDR students
  • Research supervision of HDR students on RTS projects
  • Participation in HDR confirmation and progress review panels
  • Administration related to HDR students

Does not include:

  • Research time on projects funded by ACG grants
  • Research time on projects funded by non-ACG grants and/or internal grants
  • Research time on unfunded projects
  • School, Dept and/or Facility HDR presentations
  • Professional development activities relating to Research Training
  • Mentoring of ACG funded and non-ACG grant funded post doctorates
  • Research time towards a Postgraduate research degree

Category: Other

Definition: All time spent on activities not covered by the other listed categories.

Includes

  • Preparation of all grant applications
  • Time spent as a reviewer of grant applications
  • Management of a research centre
  • Faculty management roles not related specifically to research
  • General Administration (eg HR, OH&S)
  • University Committees not related specifically to research
  • Staff meetings (School, Dept and/or Facility)
  • General team meetings or presentations
  • School, Dept and/or Facility HDR presentations
  • Consulting activities
  • Clinical work not related specifically to research
  • Media and promotion activities
  • Editorial role for journals/publishers
  • Engagement activities (eg guest speaker, volunteering, charity work)
  • Professional development
  • Travel to conferences (where time is not spent on a research activity)
  • Conference organising

Does not include:

  • Administration of research grants
  • Publication preparation
  • Conference attendance
  • Meetings with colleagues to discuss or work on research projects
  • Time taken to complete the Staff Hours Survey

Category: Leave

Definition: Hours spent on formal leave.
Note: Time spent on work-related activities may also be recorded in the categories above if undertaken while on leave.
