Legislative reporting requirements
Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR)
The Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) of research income and publications (in conjunction with data from the Higher Education Student Data Collection) are used by DIISR to allocate performance-based funding to universities under the following schemes:
Research Training Scheme (RTS)
grants to support research training for domestic students undertaking research doctorate or research masters
Joint Research Engagement (JRE)
grants to maintain and strengthen Australia's knowledge base and research capabilities (replaced the Institutional Grant Scheme (IGS) from 2010)
Sustainable Research in Universities (SRE)
grants to support the indirect costs of research
Research Infrastructure Block Grants (RIBG)
grants to enhance the development and maintenance of research infrastructure
Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS)
aims to provide high quality research commercialisation training
Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA)
support postgraduate research training and provide financial support to domestic postgraduate students
International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)
attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas of research strength in Australian higher education providers (HEPs)
Australian Research Council (ARC)
The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) is a new initiative to assess research quality within Australian higher education institutions and inform government funding mechanisms.
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
The ABS conducts a biennial Survey of Research and Experimental Development (R&D) to collect data from Australian government and private non-profit (PNP) organisations.
