Our Scholar exceeds at Oxford

Congratulations to Luca Moretti (LLB’17) on being jointly awarded the Vinerian Scholarship – the prize awarded to the student (or this year students) with the highest aggregate marks in the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at the University of Oxford. 

Luca graduates from the BCL in 2019, with two other prizes and joins a small group of five Sydney University alumni to have won the prestigious Oxford scholarship, including the Hon Justice Andrew Bell (President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal) and the Hon Dyson Heydon AC (former Justice of the High Court of Australia). 

Luca said he arrived at Oxford with very high expectations of the course and was pleased that those expectations were met. 

"The ideas we were presented with were challenging, the academics were brilliant and my fellow students were uniformly impressive. I really enjoyed my year of postgraduate study and am very grateful for this opportunity and the friendships I made at Oxford.” 

“Oxford is a remarkable place and it was wonderful to spend a year among its beautiful buildings, strange traditions and coruscating minds, but my time there also deepened my appreciation for the University of Sydney.”

“Australians' respect for foreign postgraduate qualifications is one of the few aspects of the cultural cringe which remains alive and healthy but it is very clear that Sydney Law School provides an outstanding legal education and that its students are, in my experience, capable of competing anywhere. For that reason, while receiving the Vinerian Scholarship was a very pleasant surprise, it was made all the more pleasant by seeing how well other Sydney students had done in their subjects in the BCL."

Luca was awarded the Charles Herbert Currey Memorial Scholarship and the Hannah Fullerton Scholarship by the University of Sydney, which assisted his studies at Oxford.

This took the form not only of a first-rate undergraduate education that prepared me for further study, but also encouragement through the application process from academics like Professors John Carter, Sheelagh McCracken, John Stumbles and Joellen Riley and importantly practical financial assistance by way of the university’s travelling scholarships, for which I am particularly thankful.”
