Master of Biostatistics 2019

Why I chose biostatistics at Sydney

I’ve always had an interest in health and have an undergraduate degree in Medical Science. I wanted to be learn the skills to analyse health data and generate the evidence required to inform best health practice. I knew that the University of Sydney had a good reputation for teaching so I felt confident that I would receive a quality educational experience.

How I balance online study with work and family

The flexibility of online learning was one of the main benefits of the Master of Biostatistics. I was able to organise study around work and other commitments, even continuing study without interruption when travelling overseas. Online learning does require a certain level of self-discipline but this is also a positive aspect of the program as it helps prepare you for the work environment.

How this degree has helped me to excel in my career

Starting this degree helped me secure a place in the Biostatistics Training Program run by the NSW Ministry of Health. Through this program I was able to study while gaining on the job experience.

A typical day at work

I am a lecturer of Biostatistics at the University of Sydney and Biostatistician at the Centre for Kidney Research, Westmead. My tasks are quite varied so there isn’t really a typical day but a typical week involves data analysis, meetings with stakeholders, helping other researchers with their analyses, preparing teaching resources and responding to student queries.
