OH OH Spaghettio: 2009 Degree Show
Review by Marina Yang and Jessica Alcamo, North Sydney Girls High School. Photography by Jessica Alcamo.

Once you’ve come to Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) and seen the Degree Show for yourself, it suddenly makes sense why the cover for the 2009 Degree Show catalogue is of Spaghettio’s; the show is incredibly ‘TASTEFUL’. Filled with mouth-watering installations and delicious paintings, this year’s graduates have sure cooked up a recipe for success that will cater for any artlover’s palate.
One such helping would be a jumbo-sized zipper dubbed Segredo by Honours student Laelia Douglas-Brown. The title, Segredo, we discovered from the artist, is a Portuguese word that means ‘secrecy’. Laelia, through her piece, explores the interaction between people and the inevitable deception that accompanies human condition.
We get another taste of the talent brewing at SCA with the photograph series Grit by Shayne Ferguson. Shayne’s magnificent use of lighting and the juxtaposition between dark and light within his works add depth to his seemingly simple photographs.
Another one of the many delectable pieces at the Degree Show is Tara Guinness’ Breaking Point. We spoke to Tara who described her beautifully crafted glass piece as a “self reflection of loss on a personal and universal level”.
These are but a few of the delicious works and hearing about these works has no doubt made you hungry! For a taste of the talents on display at the SCA’s Degree Show, feel free to visit the campus anytime between the 17 to 27 November. The galleries are open to the public and entry is free.
