Biographical details

Colin Rhodes is a writer, artist and educator. He works primarily in the areas of modern and contemporary art and visual culture. He is an acknowledged expert on Expressionism and Surrealism, especially as they relate to their putative artistic and cultural others. His work on self-taught and outsider art is world-renowned, including his books,Outsider Art: Spontaneous Alternatives (Thames & Hudson) and Raw Erotica(with John Maizels), and numerous essays and articles in books, journals and exhibition catalogs. He is Director of STOARC, the Self-Taught and Outsider Art Research Collection, founded at the University of Sydney in 2008, and Editor of Elsewhere, the International Journal of Self-Taught and Outsider Art. He has curated numerous exhibitions, including the critically acclaimed Roger Ballens Theatre of the Mindin Sydney in 2016. He has a keen commitment to art making and exhibits his own work occasionally.

Rhodes was Dean of SCA from 2006-2016 and inaugural Chair of the Division of Architecture and Creative Arts. He was architect and driver of the University of Sydney Disability Action Plan 2013-2018. The DAP accords with his strong personal commitment to disability and inclusion and he is associated with a number of disability and mental health organizations. He is currently Vice Chair of Studio ARTES. In recent years he has also served on the boards of Museums and Galleries of New South Wales (including time as Chair), Arts Project Australia, the Australian Council for University Art and Design Schools, and the European Association of Outsider Art. He was a member of the Peer Review College of the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council 2005 ? 2015, and served as a REC member, Humanities and Creative Arts panel, for ERA 2012 and 2015.
