COURSEWORK APPLICATIONS

Sydney College of the Arts Graduate School is currently accepting applications for entry to the Master of Contemporary Art and the Master of Moving Image.

Each degree has different application requirements, designed to confirm your skills, commitment and experience.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to a coursework degree, you must have completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts or an equivalent qualification in a related discipline, and present a portfolio of creative work which demonstrates you are capable of undertaking art practice and coursework at an advanced level.

In exceptional circumstances, the Dean may admit applicants without these qualifications, based on evidence of professional experience and achievement found to be the equivalent and deemed to be sufficient to undertake the degree.

Supporting documents

All Master of Contemporary Art applicants must provide the following supporting documents:

  • proof of identity and citizenship/residency (such as your passport or birth certificate)
  • official transcripts for academic qualifications
  • portfolio of recent creative work
  • studio project proposal, including the title and a desciption of your project (approx. 100 words)
  • context statement, outlining the contemporary art context and issues informing your studio project (approx. 200 words)
  • current CV detailing relevant professional experience, exhibitions and skills


All Master of Moving Image applicants must provide the following supporting documents:

  • proof of identity and citizenship/residency (such as your passport or birth certificate)
  • official transcripts for academic qualifications
  • portfolio of recent creative work


If applicable, you may also need to provide:

  • proof of change of name
  • evidence of English proficiency (such as IELTS or TOEFL test results)
  • professional references.

Please ensure each document is clearly labelled.

Portfolio guidelines

Your portfolio should reflect your recent creative work and demonstrate your ability to undertake advanced art practice in your nominated major studio.

Please submit up to ten (10) examples of work. You can include the following:

  • digital photographs of installations, performance, and exhibitions (preferably as one JPG, TIFF or PDF file)
  • showreel or excerpts of film, animation or digital video work (.MOV)
  • website or Vimeo channel (please provide the site address in a Word or PDF document)
  • original storyboards, treatments or scripts for short films (Word or PDF). (Maximum length of treatment - 5 pages. Maximum length of screenplay - 25 pages. DO NOT submit screenplays or scripts for feature films)

The maximum file size for each document or compressed file upload is 10MB.

Lodging your application

When you lodge your application you will be asked to provide supporting documentation, and will be prompted to upload each document in the application portal. If your application is approved for admission, you may be required to provide original or original certified documents.

You should have all of your documentation prepared before you commence your online application. Once you have prepared your supporting documentation and portfolio you are ready to submit your application. Click here to apply online

Tracking your application

After you submit your application you will receive a confirmation email providing your applicant ID number and password. If you do not receive this email, please check your junk mail folder.

Once you have these details you can track your application online, and view correspondence regarding the progress and outcome of your application.

If your application is successful, you will receive an offer of admission online in the application portal. You must be made an unconditional offer of admission, and have accepted your offer online in order to enrol in the degree.
