Presentation / Representation

Heidi Specker

Presentation / Representation, an exhibition featuring photography from Germany, will open at Sydney College of the Arts on Wednesday 13 May, 6 to 8pm. The exhibition curated by Thomas Weski for the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IfA), is presented in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Australien.

Presentation / Representation presents a cross section of the contemporary photography scene in Germany and combines the work of ten photographers in one dialogue. The first generation of Bernd Becher’s former students from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf left their mark on the field of photography for a long time. Recently a more heterogeneous scene has developed which can't be associated with any particular region or any dominant style. The artists of Presentation / Representation are members of a generation now around forty years old who have been pursuing their artistic work for more than ten years. Many have lived and worked in western and eastern Germany.

The exhibition Presentation / Representation shows ten perspectives of German contemporary photography. Laurenz Berges, Albrecht Fuchs, Karin Geiger, Claus Goedicke, Uschi Huber, Matthias Koch, Wiebke Loeper, Nicola Meitzner, Peter Piller and Heidi Specker reflect the recent developments in photography through their consciously subjective construction of authenticity. In terms of form, the presented works play with the wide spectrum of contemporary photography.

With her group of colour photographs, Specker created a complex portrait of Elsi, a woman whose unconventional lifestyle fascinated her. Specker also sought inspiration from the literature of Thomas Mann and Ingeborg Bachmann and has created an atmospheric narrative artwork. Koch takes photographs of historically symbolic buildings and landscapes. The unusually high perspective allows the presentation of spatial interrelations and shows how selected objects are embedded in their rural or urban surroundings. Koch formulates a new way of seeing symbols of national importance.

Heidi Specker and Matthias Koch will be in Australia for the exhibition Presentation / Representation. Through the SCA Artist in Residency program, Koch and Specker will give lectures and work with students at SCA during May and June.

Presentation / Representation will be on display at Sydney College of the Arts from Thursday 14 May to Sunday 21 June 2009. Opening Wednesday 13 May, 6 to 8pm.
Gallery hours: Wednesday to Friday, 11am to 5pm. Saturday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm
