Master of Documentary Photography candidates, Joshua Heath and Lynn Smith have been announced as the shortlisted winners of Student Focus 2009, Sony World Photography Awards. Heath and Smith were selected as the Australasia winners, making the University of Sydney one of the six winning institutions from around the world.

The shortlisted winners were selected by a prestigious judging panel from the photographic community including: Tom Ang - Leading Digital Photography specialist, Ruth Eichhorn - Director of Photography GEO Magazine, Mary-Ellen Mark - Documentary Photographer, Adrian Evans - Director of Panos Pictures and Susan Welchman - Senior photo editor at National Geographic. The judges were impressed with the entries they received and the coherence to the brief.

"The students tackled the theme of 'Eco' with energy, imagination and seriousness. They produced a wide range of images in response to the brief, which promises that we'll have an exciting final shoot-out when the regional winners assemble in Cannes." says Tom Ang, Judge.

Heath and Smith's images will be exhibited at the World Photography Awards exhibition at the Palais des Festivals, Cannes, France from 14 to 19 April 2009.
