Who's eligible

You must be:

  • currently enrolled in the third year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the Westmead Clinical School, University of Sydney
  • undertaking an elective term in the area of infectious diseases and/or medical care in a developing country.

Background

Established in 2017, this scholarship has been generously donated by Miss Patricia Will to assist students who wish to undertake an elective term in the area of infectious diseases and/or medical care in developing countries.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2017 to provide assistance to students studying a Doctor of Medicine at the Westmead Clinical School and undertaking an Elective Term in the area of infectious diseases and/or medical care in developing countries.

b. This Scholarship is funded by a donation from Patricia Will.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in the third year of a Doctor of Medicine at the Westmead Clinical School, University of Sydney. 

b. Applicants must be undertaking an elective term in the area of infectious diseases and/or medical care in a developing country.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, 

II. curriculum vitae,

III. references, 

IV. a personal statement, and 

V. the content and location of the Elective Term.

b. Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School and Dean of the Sydney Medical School, or their nominated delegate(s).

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $2,500 and is tenable for the elective term period. 

b. The Scholarship value will be paid as a one-off payment upon receipt of signed Terms and Conditions and Acceptance Form.

c. Deferral of the scholarship is not permitted.

d. The scholarship cannot be transferred to another University school, faculty or university. 

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. Travel insurance will be provided by the University of Sydney in accordance with University policy.

g. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. changes their elective term placement prior to notifying the Sydney Medical School,

III. commences part-time study without prior approval of the Head of School and Dean, Sydney Medical School, 

IV. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, 

V. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, 

VI. is awarded an alternative scholarship for their Sydney Medical School Elective Term placement. In such circumstances this Scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative Scholarship where the alternative Scholarship is of higher value, or

VII. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.  

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed. 

6. Other requirements

a. The recipient must provide a report to the Electives Coordinator at the conclusion of their Scholarship.
