Matriculation prizes

The University of Sydney offers a number of prizes for general proficiency in the HSC. No application is required. The Scholarships Office check admission and enrolment information and notify all successful students in May.

A.J. Shearsby Prize

For: Proficiency in Geology in the HSC; the successful student must enrol in Geology

Alexander Donald Scholarship

For: Students from Sydney Grammar School for general proficiency in the HSC; the successful student must enrol in the Faculty of Veterinary Science

Bowman-Cameron Scholarship

For: General proficiency in the HSC upon entrance to University, tenable in the Faculty of Arts

Cecilie Purves Memorial Prize

For: Students from the Sydney Church of England Grammar School for general proficiency in the HSC; the successful student must enrol at the University of Sydney

Cooper Scholarship No. II

For: Profiency in Classics, the successful student must enrol in University after the HSC

For: Most proficient female candidate at HSC and enrolling full time in a bachelor degree, demonstrating sufficient academic merit

G.C. Halliday Scholarship

For: Students from Sydney Grammar School for general proficiency in the HSC, the successful student must enrol in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Law, Science or Engineering & IT

Garton Scholarship No. III

Grahame Prize Medal

Founded in 1891 by a bequest of (pounds)100 from William Grahame of Waverley. Formerly awarded to such candidate as shall display the greatest general proficiency at the Senior Public Examination. From 1918 awarded by authority of the University Prizes and Medals Alteration Act, 1917, to the greatest proficient at the university examinations for scholarships at entrance to the University.

Horner Exhibition Prize

For: Proficiency in Mathematics in the HSC; the successful student must enrol in 12 credit points of Junior Mathematics in the Faculties of Arts, Science or Engineering & IT

John West Medal

For: General proficiency in the HSC. Founded in 1874 by a gift of (pounds)200 from the subscribers to a memorial of the Reverend John West, editor of the Sydney Morning Herald. Formerly awarded to the greatest proficient in the Senior Public Examinations. From 1918 awarded by authority of the University Prizes and Medals Alteration Act, 1917, to the greatest proficient at the university examinations for scholarships at entrance to the University.

For: Proficiency in German in the HSC; the successful student must enrol in a German unit

Liversidge Scholarship

For: Proficiency in Chemistry in the HSC; the successful students must enrol in either Chemistry 1A (SSP) and Chemistry 1B (SSP), or Chemistry 1A (Advanced) and Chemistry 1B (Advanced), or Chemistry 1A and Chemistry 1B

Miriam Josepha Makinson Memorial Prize

For: Students from North Sydney Girls' High School for general proficiency in the HSC; the successful student must enrol at The University of Sydney

Nicholson Matriculation Scholarship

Established in 1979 from a surplus accumulated income of the fund established for the Nicholson Medal. One scholarship is awarded each year to a candidate for the degree of bachelor of the University of Sydney who enrols in Latin 1101 and who demonstrated the greatest proficiency in HSC Latin. The scholar is required to attend Latin 1101 during tenure of the scholarship. Tenable for one year. The scholarship cannot be held with the Cooper Scholarship No. II.

Plumian Scholarship

For: General proficiency in the HSC upon entrance to University. The successful student must enrol in at least 12 credit points in either First Year Biology, Geology or Geography in the Faculty of Science.

One scholarship is available per year.

Queen Victoria Scholarship

Awarded to the best girl matriculant of the year, and be tenable for three years under the conditions usually existing for scholarships. 2. That the scholar shall satisfy the University that she requires the money (e.g. equity), otherwise it shall be handed over to the Chancellor to be used for a bursary for girls, the original winner retaining the title of Queen Victoria Scholar. Tenable for three years.

Shelley Phillips Scholarship

Established in 2006,from a donation of $50,000 from Dr Shelley Phillips. Dr Phillips was a writer, psychologist and academic, who completed her PhD at the University of Sydney. The scholarship aims to encourage female students from rural and regional Australia to undertake full-time study at the University of Sydney. The scholarship will be awarded under the following conditions:
1. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit to a female student from a rural or regional area of Australia.
2. The recipient must be commencing full-time study in an undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney in the year of award. The duration of the scholarship will be one year only.
3. All applicants to the University of Sydney Access Scholarship will be considered for the Shelley Phillips Scholarships without requiring separate application. Eligibility will be determined on the basis of that application process.
4. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with another scholarship at the University of Sydney.
5. The University may decide not to offer the scholarship in a given year if there are no candidates of sufficient merit.
