Scholarships for Indigenous students

As well as the two scholarships listed here, the University also offers a special entry program, the Cadigal Alternative Entry Program specifically for Indigenous Australian students.

Please note: Although you may be eligible for Indigenous student scholarships we strongly recommend you apply for any scholarships for which you may also be eligible. For instance, other University of Sydney scholarships, residential scholarships, external scholarships, etc.


Commonwealth Indigenous Scholarships

For: Indigenous students in financial need commencing their first year of their first degree.
Value: These payments are indexed and will change on an annual basis. In 2011 the payment will be worth $4,321.
How to apply: Application forms are available on the UAC Website and will be processed by UAC. Apply using the Equity Scholarships form.

Konstantin Gawrilow Scholarship

For: Available to women of no more than 25 years of age commencing a first year course at the University of Sydney who are enrolled to study Russian language or literature (or both) at the Centre of Continuing Education OR any other Australian university (as these subjects are not currently offered at USyd); and either:
(a) are of Aboriginal background and (i) have no living parents, or (ii) have only one living parent, or (iii) are cared for, or were until attaining majority cared for, by one parent by reason of the desertion of the other parent; or (b) are not of Aboriginal background and (i) have no living parents, or (ii) have only one living parent.
Value: $7500, for 1 year, with possibility of renewal if the student maintains satisfactory academic progress
Applications have closed for 2011. Applications for 2012 will open in April 2012.

Note:This scholarship is awarded on the basis of HSC or equivalent entry examination results.

The Lisa Fox Indigenous Fellowship Program at New York University

For: One Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander postgraduate to undertake a Masters (MA) or Doctoral (PhD) program at New York University (NYU), commencing in September 2012 in the areas of Arts, Business, Cinema Studies, Education, Film, Interactive Telecommunications, Musical Theater Writing, Nursing, Performance Studies and Science at the following NYU facilities:
(i) NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science (ii) NYU Leonard N.Stern School of Business (iii) NYU Tisch School of the Arts (iv) NYU College of Nursing (v) NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.
Value: The Fellowship is tenable for up to four years. The value of the Fellowship will vary, depending on the fellowship-holder's course of study. The Fellowship covers the cost of tuition and travel, plus an annual stipend of approximately US $30,000 (AUD $29,394) for accommodation and living expenses.
