Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend and University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPA)

Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarships are Commonwealth Government scholarships awarded to students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research at an Australian university. The scholarships are provided to assist with general living costs.

University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPA) are also available and they are similar to the RTP Stipend Scholarships in terms of tenure and benefits. Eligible RTP Stipend applicants are automatically considered for these awards.

Applicants can apply for these scholarships all year round. Scholarships are awarded on a quarterly basis. Unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to reapply if their situation changes (such as the publication of an article).

To be considered for a scholarship, students must complete both their application for admission in postgraduate research to the relevant faculty and their scholarship application.

If you are a current or former student at the University of Sydney, please enter your student identification number (SID) in your RTP Stipend / UPA application form. Applicants who are not currently studying at USYD will receive an SID once they have submitted a course application.

Some faculties and departments also offer postgraduate research scholarships and top-up awards with the RTP Stipend/UPA process (see Sections 3 and 4 of the information document below).

Please see the RTP Stipend/UPA Information Document and Research Experience documents below.

This application is for domestic students only. International students should review the information on international postgraduate research scholarships, particularly the Research Training Program Fee Offset and Stipend Scholarship.
