Prizes Ceremony

22 May, 2009

The School of Biological Sciences awards a number of prizes to outstanding students throughout the undergraduate and postgraduate years. Rather than an anonymous letter and prize arriving in the mail, this year the Head of School held a prize-giving ceremony to which all prize-winners and their families and friends were invited.

The ceremony was held in the DTAnderson lecture theatre in the Heydon-Laurence Building (known as the Zoology building to many alumni). An introductory address was given by Professor Rick Shine, who indicated how excellent our students are, and that the prize winners represented the best of the best. The Occasional Address was presented by past staff member, Dr Peter Valder, whose very entertaining speech on aspects of his career had the whole audience in stitches. The prizes were presented to students by key members of the School, past members of staff, alumni and benefactors. Junior, intermediate and senior prizes were presented by Samantha Rice from McGraw Hill, Dr Elizabeth May and Dr Peter Valder respectively. The Honours prizes were presented by Associate Professor Chris Gillies, with the exception of the Ilma Brewer prize which was presented by Peter Brewer on behalf of his mother, Ilma Brewer. Professor Rick Shine presented the University Medal and postgraduate prizes, and Dr Peter Valder awarded the Outreach prize.

The group retired to an informal lunch in the Macleay Museum. A good time was had by all.
