Structure and Function

Click on the pulmonary tree for more detail

The prime function of the lungs is to provide efficient gas exchange between inspired air and the circulation. In healthy individuals this results in adequate oxygenation of the blood and removal of carbon dioxide. However, proper lung function can be impaired by a number of diseases. The lungs are second only to the skin in the degree to which they come in contact with the external environment so the potential for invasion and infection is high.
