In this image, the interface between the symplast and apoplast is the Casparian strip.
The Casparian strip is identified by the suberized (and hence red-stained) end walls of the endodermis. The presence of suberin provides an aqueous barrier so that any solubilised minerals and nutrients must enter the stele via the cytoplasm through the plasmodesmata.
