Luana Lins

I am a visiting researcher in the MEEP lab, working with A/Prof. Nathan Lo and A/Prof. Simon Ho. I completed my PhD in early 2015 under the supervision of A/Prof. Nathan Lo, Dr George "Buz" Wilson (Australian Museum), and A/Prof. Simon Ho.

During my doctorate I studied a group of deep-sea crustaceans, the Asellota, which have great diversity in both family and species number. This group of isopods is present in many basins in the world, but little is known about their evolution, including the processes that led to their current distribution.

My project involved the use of molecular and morphological information to investigate the phylogeny and biogeography of the Asellota. Using molecular data, I found cryptic species that are difficult to identify using morphological data. Understanding the phylogeny of this group should help to reveal general patterns and processes of evolution in the deep-sea fauna.
